When She Walks
for mezzo soprano, oboe, tenor saxophone,
and cello. 12min.
This piece takes inspiration from Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes's hit tune "The Girl from Ipanema".
The Getz/Gilberto recording was dramatically slowed down and transcribed. The resulting material was distributed between the instruments of the ensemble and organised into an open framework where each musician must listen and react to the rest of the ensemble in order to drive the piece forwards. This is dotted with melodic material from the original song and broken up by long dramatic cello solos.
